Station No. 15 of the Metropolitan Dade County Fire Department,
to be officially dedicated at 10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 4),
could be the most prestigious location of any fire station in Florida.
The station protects a stretch of about five miles along the
Rickenbacker Causeway, including Key Biscayne and Virginia Key.
This includes three luxury hotels and the residence of President Richard M. Nixon.
Other major landmarks are the City of Miami Marine Stadium, site of innumerable
exciting powerboat racing competitions; and the Seaquarium,
home of Flipper the dolphin and Hugo the Killer Whale.
Cape Florida Lighthouse and Cape Florida Park are also in the area protected by the new station.
In all, 5,500 permanent residents of Key Biscayne
will be afforded protection by the new facility.
The dedication ceremonies will be highlighted by speeches of Metro Mayor Chuck Hall
and Vice Mayor Arthur H. Patten, Jr., who represents District 6, including Key Biscayne, on the Metro Commission.
The dedication will be followed by light refreshments and an open house will last through the afternoon.
The public was invited to enjoy the ceremony, at the new station's site, 2 Crandon Blvd. on Key Biscayne.
