Rhode Island Firemen Stage Rescue Drill
companies and rescue squads from five Rhode Island municipalities tested their ability to carry out a coordinated rescue operation by staging a disaster in an abandoned "mansion" in Lymansville, in the Town of North Providence. The test, sponsored by the Lymansville Fire Company, was "pulled" on the evening of February 25th with 150 volunteer and professional rescue workers participating. State observers on the scene included Chief Charles Quinn, Chairman, Rescue and Disaster Unit of the Governor's Fire Conference, Deputy State Fire Marshal Thomas McHugh, Dr. William McDonnell of the Rhode Island Medical Society, and Thomas C. McCormick, North Providence CD director.
The drill was given no advance publicity and the first notice of an incident was the sounding of fire alarm box 532 at 7:29 P.M.
The log of calls follows:

Companies responding found that 19 "victims" of an imaginary explosion had been planted throughout the old abandoned "Bruell mansion." All were members of participating units who had been placed under the direction of Captain Stevens Fricker of the Providence Emergency Aid Corps. The problem involved treatment, removal and transportation of an undetermined number of casualties. Each victim was tagged to indicate the type of injury requiring first aid on the scene.
A police detail consisting of 13 regular and special officers and 13 members of the North Providence Police Reserve, all under the direction of Captain Joseph Bonaventora blocked off every street leading to the area of the simulated disaster.
The entire rescue exercise was under the command of Chief Wilfred Payette of Lymansville assisted by Captain Robert Thirkelson of the ambulance squad and Deputy Chief Thomas Buco and Captain Anthony Caccia.
By 8:43 P.M. a little more than an hour after the first alarm was sounded, all 19 live "victims" had been given first aid and removed from the building and were on

their way in ambulances to the field hospital set up at the Lymansville fire station.
Among those assisting in the direction of the drill were Lt. Albert Brodeur of Providence Rescue Unit 2, Georgiaville Fire Chief Milton Cory, Capt Kenneth Aust of the Graniteville Rescue Squad, Fruit Hill Fire, Chief Joseph T. Morrissey, Capt. John Varone of the Fruit Hill rescue unit, Centredale Fire Chief John P. Murphy, Chief Percy Annear of the Providence Emergency Aid Corps and Capt. Robert Claflin of the Harmony rescue squad.
